Over the past year, we have all been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, but one industry that seems to have thrived is the garden renovation industry.

With so many people being unable to jet off on their usual holidays, their attentions turned to their own back gardens! Being stuck at home and having the time to get things sorted made the idea of a staycation more appealing than ever before.

What kinds of things have people added to their gardens?

When you look at the most popular garden trends inspired on by the COVID-19 pandemic, it will come as no surprise that people have favoured high-quality, low-maintenance features that can dramatically change a dull garden space into a relaxing haven. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular features.

Garden decking

Garden decking has been a popular feature of British gardens for as long as we can remember. There’s been a sharp increase in demand for composite decking, in particular, because it’s so durable and easy to maintain. Traditional timber decking is an appealing option, but when people realise that it needs sanding, staining and sealing annually, it really puts them off. Why would you sign yourself up for all that work when you can achieve the same stylish wood look with a decking product that requires no maintenance at all! It’s no surprise that so many people chose to add composite decking to their gardens over the past year, it’s a great investment and will keep its good looks for years to come.

Paving slabs

For homeowners that wanted to create a cleaner, more modern garden design, paving slabs have been the preferred option. Nowadays, you can get beautiful porcelain paving slabs that can be installed without the need for cement or mortar. This means people have been able to install their new patios within a single day. This has been an attractive option during the pandemic because it limits the face-to-face contact with installers. On top of this, porcelain paving is a great investment for gardens because it lasts such a long time & isn’t weathered by rain, snow or heavy footfall. It’s a highly-durable paving option that has certainly gained popularity over the past year.

Garden rooms and verandas

One thing that really prevents people from enjoying their garden all year round is the weather. A way to make better use of the garden, rain or shine, is to create a covered space. During the pandemic, lots of homeowners took the opportunity to expand their living space with garden rooms and verandas. Some people even use their new space as a functional garden office, helping them enjoy more of the fresh air and beautiful surroundings while working at home. Installing a garden room or veranda that helps you enjoy  your garden more often can have numerous mental health benefits, so if you’re going to be working at home for the foreseeable future, we’d recommend considering it!

So now you know why garden renovations became so popular during the pandemic. We hope that if you’re thinking about starting a garden renovation of your own, that you’ll consider these popular features too.
