This Sunday, May 28, marks the 10th annual Menstrual Hygiene Day, an event created by German NGO WASH United to bring attention to the plight of women suffering from period poverty. To celebrate the occasion, Hope Spring Nigeria will be running a reusable pad training workshop at Government Secondary School Kabusa Abuja on May 31.
The workshop will educate young girls on the importance of menstrual hygiene and provide them with sustainable solutions. Participants will be instructed on the fabric and size specifications necessary to make their own reusable pads, as well as how to cut, assemble and make them. This will not only keep girls in school, but also help alleviate period poverty.
“We are pleased with the hands-on workshop we are running on May 31st 2023. The event will potentially benefit more than Forty young adults,” said Bolu Olorunfemi, Hope Spring Nigeria’s Director of Period Poverty.
The charity’s menstrual hygiene work recently received a major boost from two sources. The first is proceeds from the popular video eCard Happy Birthday from Africa, and the second is a sponsored fundraiser by one of the NGO’s supporters.
Hope Spring’s menstrual hygiene day reusable pad training is making great strides in improving menstrual health education for young women around Nigeria, granting them autonomy over their reproductive health needs while also protecting the environment for future generations.
