Nostos Homes, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing safe and affordable housing to refugees and displaced individuals, has been working to promote environmental sustainability in Malawi since 2020. The Malawi government has banned the use of fire-cured bricks in all construction projects as part of a broader effort to reduce environmental impact and promote sustainable building practices.

In response, Nostos Homes has developed a unique approach to emergency housing that utilizes ‘LEGO-like’ construction techniques and 90% recyclable materials to create safe and weatherproof homes that can be built in days. The organization has also collaborated with local artisans to provide them with the know-how to construct the houses, as well as to foster a sense of community and ownership.

Nostos Homes also seeks to contribute to local community rebuilding efforts through dialogues with those affected by disasters. This approach allows the organization to gain a deeper understanding of community needs and challenges, as well as to explore the potential for integrating local resources and businesses into the manufacturing process.

The homes have brought hope and laughter back to Phalombe, Malawi, an area ravaged by cyclone Gombe. Children run and wave outside the Nostos community that has provided their families with 350,000 nights of shelter.

“Modulus taught us the techniques on constructing the Nostos houses, it was very straightforward and easy to learn,” said Felix Mtambalika and Davie Nankhonya, two of the local artisans who helped with the housing construction.

Peter Chimangeni, Director at the Department of Disaster Management Affairs, Government of Malawi, expressed his support for Nostos Homes’ deployment plans. “By focusing on this fundamental building block, we hope to create a ripple effect that will lead to broader social and economic development in the region we deploy in,” he said.

Madhav Datt, Co-Founder & Chairman of Nostos Homes, said: “We are helping to pave the way for a more sustainable and resilient future for the people of Malawi.”

Kaushal Shetty, Co-Founder & CEO of Nostos Homes, added: “If you are interested in joining this important mission, let’s talk.”

In order to rebuild the local community, Nostos Homes has sought the help of local artisans to assist in the construction of the homes and has engaged with the beneficiaries in improving the housing design, delivery, and deployment. Community involvement is a crucial aspect of the organization’s mission, which emphasizes co-creation and actively engages local communities in the home-building process.
