Laser technology has undoubtedly revolutionized the dental field. It changed how many dental problems and oral diseases are treated, offering a cleaner and less invasive approach.

Although laser dentistry has pros and cons, it is a fact that it is here to stay. If you are wondering whether this therapy is right for you, in this blog, we explain 4 things you need to know before making the decision.

What is laser dentistry?

First of all, we need to understand how laser dentistry works. Lasers produce a narrow but intense beam of light that has an effect on both soft and hard tissues, and it is used for multiple dental procedures. It can replace many dental instruments and tools, including scalpels and the dreaded drill.

When is laser dentistry used?

Laser light can remodel and reshape both hard and soft tissues, so this technology is used in multiple dental procedures, including:

Tooth fillings
Gum recontouring (gummy smile treatment).
Periodontal therapy
Root canal treatment
Biopsy or lesion removal
Teeth whitening

What are the benefits of laser dentistry?

Some of the advantages of this technology are:

– Comfortable treatments. Laser dentistry is almost painless. In most cases, patients don’t even need to receive local anaesthesia, and as the dentist doesn’t use the drill, they don’t feel the annoying vibration or listen to its dreadful sound.

– Better post-ops. This technology reduces blood loss, which results in less swallowing after treatment. This enables rapid and more comfortable recovery, making a considerable difference in the post-op of complex procedures.

 – Lower chances of infection. Laser light kills bacteria in soft and hard tissues, significantly reducing the chances of post-op complications and reinfections.

Does it have any disadvantages?

Although laser dentistry is practical and convenient, it still has some disadvantages that patients need to think about before undergoing treatment:

Laser dentistry requires state-of-the-art technology, so treatments tend to be more expensive
Dentists might still need to use the drill in some steps, such as shaping the filling, adjusting the bite, and polishing the filling.
Laser light is ineffective in certain situations, like replacing old silver fillings or preparing a tooth for a dental crown.
