Dr. Zavier Ash is a seasoned medical professional based in Tucker, Georgia, with over 25 years of experience in both traditional and holistic medicine.

His career began at Morehouse College, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology. Dr. Zavier Ash went on to graduate with highest honours from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee, before completing residencies in OBGYN and family medicine at East Carolina University.

Dr. Ash built a strong reputation through his long-standing family practice, which served the Tucker community for more than two decades. In 2022, after selling that practice, he launched two new ventures—AshCare Functional Medicine, LLC and 7Days Of Weight & Wellness, LLC—to better reflect his evolving philosophy around whole-body health and personalized care.

His focus now lies in functional medicine, where he combines evidence-based treatments with natural approaches such as nutrition, herbal remedies, and lifestyle changes. He is also a certified FMCSA medical examiner for DOT physicals and a USCIS Civil Surgeon for immigration medical exams in Dekalb and Gwinnett counties.

Dr. Ash is a member of the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Family Physicians. Outside of medicine, he enjoys farming, fishing, and time outdoors—interests that mirror his approach to wellness.

Today, he is recognised not only as a trusted doctor but also as a thought leader in the shift towards integrative health solutions. “It’s about treating people, not just illnesses,” he says. His name remains a respected one in Georgia’s healthcare landscape.

Q&A with Dr. Zavier Ash: The Path from Traditional Medicine to Functional Care

Dr. Ash, what first drew you to medicine?

I always had a love for science and wanted to help people. Growing up in Georgia, I saw how access to proper care could change lives. That inspired me to go to Morehouse College to study biology. From there, I knew medicine was my path.

What were your early experiences in medical school like?

Meharry Medical College in Nashville was life-changing. I was surrounded by professors and peers who pushed me to be my best. I graduated with highest honours and carried that discipline into my residencies at East Carolina University. I trained in both OBGYN and family medicine.

After all that training, what led you to start your own practice?

I believed in building relationships with patients. I opened my family practice in Tucker, Georgia, in the early 2000s. Over the years, I had the chance to care for entire families. Some of my patients stayed with me for over 20 years. That kind of trust is something I never took for granted.

You’ve since moved on from that practice. What happened?

I sold the practice in 2022. It was eventually purchased by CommunityMD. I want to be clear that I’m no longer connected to them in any way. That chapter has closed. I wanted to return to a more personal, values-driven approach.

That’s when you started AshCare and 7Days Of Weight & Wellness?

Yes, both reflect how I see healthcare today. AshCare focuses on functional medicine—addressing root causes of illness through diet, herbs, and lifestyle. 7Days Of Weight & Wellness helps patients take back control of their health in a structured and supportive environment.

What made you shift toward functional and holistic medicine?

I’ve always respected traditional medicine, but I saw its limits. You can’t just treat symptoms and ignore what’s behind them. Patients would return with the same problems. Functional medicine lets me dig deeper. I ask about sleep, stress, what they eat. It’s about the full picture.

You’re also a certified DOT examiner and Civil Surgeon now—how do those roles fit into your practice?

They’re practical and essential. In April 2025, I passed the FMCSA exam and joined the National Registry for DOT medical exams. I also became a Civil Surgeon, authorised to conduct immigration physicals in Dekalb and Gwinnett counties. These certifications help me serve different needs in my community.

What does a typical day look like for you now?

Every day is different. I could be doing a wellness consult, a DOT exam, or an immigration physical. I still spend a lot of time talking to patients. That hasn’t changed. People want to be heard. I think that’s one reason they come back.

How do you balance your career with personal life?

I enjoy simple things—gardening, fishing, and caring for animals. Being outside helps me reset. It also keeps me close to the values I promote in my clinic. If I’m telling someone food is medicine, I need to live that too.

What advice would you give to younger doctors or anyone entering this field?

Learn to listen. Technology can’t replace a good conversation. Also, stay curious. Medicine is always changing, and your role in it should grow too. For me, that meant stepping away from the system to create something that better fits my values.
