Disney is making a massive play for artificial intelligence dominance by spending millions to poach top talent from Character.AI, a chatbot startup currently navigating bankruptcy proceedings. According to recent court filings, the entertainment giant plans to pay roughly 60 million dollars annually to recruit 66 specialized workers. To ensure these experts don’t jump ship, Disney is adding another 30 million dollars into a retention pool, projecting total costs for compensation and incentives to hit 180 million dollars over the next three years.
This aggressive hiring spree comes on the heels of a paradoxical period for the Mouse House. Just two weeks prior to this move, Disney trimmed its own ranks through several hundred layoffs, which included members of its existing tech staff. This shift in personnel reflects a broader strategic pivot led by CEO Josh D’Amaro and newly appointed company-wide tech chief Karandeep Anand, both of whom are looking to modernize Disney’s digital infrastructure and revitalize a stock price that has struggled significantly over the last five years.
Beyond just poaching people, Disney is also securing the tools they used by agreeing to pay 20 million dollars for key intellectual property and technical assets from Character.AI. The relationship between the two entities has been rocky in the past; last autumn, Disney issued a cease-and-desist order demanding that the startup remove unauthorized AI versions of Marvel and Star Wars characters from its platform. Now, however, Disney views that same expertise as essential for staying competitive in an evolving media landscape.
Industry analysts suggest that while the price tags associated with these hires may seem astronomical, they are standard for high-level AI engineers whose skills are currently the most sought-after currency in Silicon Valley. For Disney, the investment represents more than just software development; it is an attempt to leverage generative technology across its vast empire of storytelling and theme parks at what Anand describes as a critical inflection point for the industry.
