Chime CEO Chris Britt took the stage yesterday to announce the launch of Chime Invest, a new product aimed at closing the gap between everyday Americans and the stock market. Speaking at a financial technology conference in San Francisco, Britt said the new feature will allow Chime’s millions of users to start investing with as little as one dollar, directly through the app they already use for banking and direct deposit access.
The move comes at a time when stock market participation remains heavily skewed toward higher income households. According to data cited during the presentation, roughly half of Americans own no stocks at all, either directly or through retirement accounts. Britt argued that traditional brokerages have failed to address this divide because their fee structures and minimum balance requirements effectively shut out working class consumers who live paycheck to paycheck.
Chime Invest will offer fractional shares across a curated selection of exchange traded funds and individual stocks, with no commission fees attached to trades. Users will also have access to automated portfolio options that allocate contributions based on individual risk tolerance and time horizon. The company plans to roll out educational content within the app to help first time investors understand basic concepts like diversification and compound growth over time.
Industry analysts say the announcement puts Chime in more direct competition with established investing platforms like Robinhood and Acorns, though Chime’s existing relationship with its customer base gives it an advantage. Many users already receive their paychecks through Chime two days early and use the platform for spending accounts, which means adding investment capabilities could feel like a natural extension rather than requiring them to download and fund an entirely separate application.
