A significant injection of federal capital is set to revitalize mineral exploration in Arvon Township, as the U.S. Department of War invests 5.22 million dollars into the LM nickel copper project. The funding will support Trans Superior Resources, a Michigan subsidiary of Canada based Bitterroot Resources, as they move toward an aggressive drilling phase scheduled to begin next year near the Slate River.
Company leadership believes they have uncovered something substantial during preliminary efforts conducted between 2020 and 2022. According to Bitterroot CEO Michael Carr, initial drilling across twenty six holes yielded positive results in ten instances, reaching depths of roughly 325 meters. The team now aims to push deeper, targeting approximately 2,000 feet to trace a conduit type system similar to the successful operations seen at the nearby Eagle Mine.
Local officials view this financial commitment as more than just a win for one company, seeing it instead as a validation of the region’s strategic importance. Marty Fittante, CEO of InvestUP, noted that the investment signals a broader national recognition of the Upper Peninsula’s potential to lead the critical minerals sector. By positioning the area as a hub for these essential materials, state leaders hope to attract further industrial growth and stability to the rural landscape.
Beyond the geological goals, there is high hope that the project will serve as an economic engine for Baraga County. Carr suggests that replicating the success found in Marquette County could provide a massive lift to the local community through a powerful multiplier effect, where every dollar generated by mining ripples throughout the regional economy. With permits already secured, the focus now shifts to sourcing drilling rigs ahead of next year’s launch.
