India’s Essar Group to invest $18 billion in ‘largest’ US steel plant, Trump announces

President Donald Trump announced on Monday that the Indian conglomerate Essar Group plans to invest approximately 18 billion dollars into what is slated to be the largest steel plant in American history. Speaking from the White House alongside leadership from Essar and its US subsidiary, Mesabi Metallics, Trump hailed the massive project in Iowa as a landmark achievement for domestic manufacturing. Once fully operational, the facility is expected to produce 10 million tonnes of steel per year, with initial production targets set for 2030.

The ambitious venture aims to create a completely integrated supply chain within the United States, linking the upcoming Iowa mill with a new iron ore mine in Minnesota’s Mesabi Iron Range. This supporting mining operation represents an additional 2.5 billion dollar investment and marks the first new iron ore mine opened in the country in over five decades. Together, these projects are projected to generate thousands of construction roles and nearly 2,000 permanent positions across both mining and steel operations.

During the event, Rewant Ruia, chairman of Mesabi Metallics, described the investment as a true homecoming given his extensive education and time spent living in several US cities. He emphasized that by controlling everything from the mine to the mill using advanced technology, the plant will be able to compete globally on size, quality, and cost while revitalizing American industrial capacity.

President Trump and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick suggested that current trade policies played a significant role in attracting this capital. Trump noted that federal steel tariffs have incentivized international companies to build their facilities directly within US borders rather than paying duties on imported goods. By ensuring that materials are mined and melted domestically, the administration argues it is securing a more resilient national infrastructure.
