Micron unveils Boise-based research lab, plans $10 billion investment over next decade

Micron Technology is doubling down on its Idaho roots with the announcement of a massive new research institution in Boise. Backed by a planned 10 billion dollar investment over the next ten years, Micron Research Labs aims to become a premier American hub for breakthroughs in memory and semiconductor technology. By bringing together academic institutions, government agencies, and private industry partners, the company hopes to move beyond current technical roadmaps and pioneer the foundations of the artificial intelligence economy.

According to Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra, the initiative is driven by the belief that America’s AI future must be built on American made memory. The project focuses on high level goals such as advanced compute architectures and innovative manufacturing processes, seeking solutions that look past a traditional ten year horizon. While the headquarters will be located in Boise, the network will connect with satellite labs across Europe, Asia, and other parts of the United States to speed up the transition from laboratory discoveries to commercial applications.

The economic implications for the Treasure Valley are significant. Local officials, including Boise Mayor Lauren McLean, view the investment as a generational opportunity that provides local students and professionals a reason to stay or return to Idaho for high tech careers. Beyond the immediate scientific goals, city leaders expect a ripple effect that will benefit regional construction firms, educators, and small businesses through increased collaboration with entities like Boise State University and the College of Western Idaho.

Construction on the state of the art facility is expected to begin in 2027. Once complete, the campus will host hundreds of researchers and serve as a venue for international innovation forums and workshops. This latest venture complements previous commitments totaling over 250 billion dollars toward domestic manufacturing and research and development, reinforcing Micron’s position as a cornerstone of US technological independence during an increasingly competitive global chip race.
