The grant is designed to prepare the next generation of workers for high-demand jobs in defense manufacturing and maintenance, sectors that have struggled to find qualified talent as older workers retire and fewer young people pursue vocational paths. Rowe has long argued that the nation’s focus on four-year degrees has left critical trades understaffed, and he sees the Pentagon’s involvement as a sign that leaders are finally taking the problem seriously.
