Nvidia discloses $21 billion stake in SpaceX at end of second quarter

Nvidia has revealed a massive financial tie to Elon Musk’s aerospace empire, disclosing a stake in SpaceX worth approximately 21 billion dollars at the close of the second quarter. According to recent filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the semiconductor giant holds nearly 123 million Class A shares in the rocket manufacturer. While fluctuations in the stock price since June have brought the current valuation of those holdings down to around 17.2 billion dollars, the move still marks an incredible windfall for Nvidia following an initial investment just under a year ago.

The path to this ownership was complex, stemming from Nvidia’s previous involvement with Musk’s artificial intelligence venture, xAI. Sources indicate that Nvidia participated in a substantial funding round for xAI back in January, and these interests were converted into SpaceX equity after the rocket company acquired xAI in a staggering 1.25 trillion dollar deal last February. This strategic alignment places Nvidia as the sixth largest investor in SpaceX, trailing far behind Musk himself and Alphabet, but establishing a powerful bridge between two of the most influential companies in modern technology.

This financial partnership coincides with a deepening technical reliance between the two firms. During a recent earnings call, Elon Musk confirmed that SpaceX intends to use Nvidia chips exclusively within its AI data centers, praising their architecture as the gold standard for model training and inference. Looking ahead toward next year, Musk indicated that SpaceX expects to receive a significant allocation of Nvidia’s upcoming Vera Rubin GPUs, ensuring that his vision for space exploration remains powered by the industry leading hardware produced by one of its own major shareholders.
