China has been quietly ramping up its efforts to protect the planet from wayward asteroids, and the pace is picking up. In late June, Beijing unveiled plans for an asteroid early-warning network, and shortly after that, it released new details about a long-developing asteroid deflection mission currently slated for 2027. The mission would send a spacecraft to slam into an asteroid in an attempt to nudge it off its original path and possibly break apart its structure. These moves build on years of groundwork, including China’s 2018 entry into two United Nations-backed planetary defense bodies and a 2021 white paper that elevated near-Earth object defense to a national policy priority.
Behind the scientific ambition lies a deeper set of motivations rooted in politics, prestige, and security. Researchers who study China’s space program note that planetary defense offers Beijing a chance to project itself as both a comprehensive space power and a responsible global actor serving humanity’s shared interests. That framing fits neatly into President Xi Jinping’s call to turn China into a space power “in all respects” and his broader narrative of building a global community of shared future. Domestically, the program also bolsters government legitimacy by showcasing technological prowess while responding to genuine public anxiety — Chinese officials have pointed to a 2017 fireball explosion over Yunnan Province and recent social media chatter as evidence of citizen concern.
There is also a military dimension hiding in plain sight. Many capabilities needed for planetary defense, such as tracking objects in deep space and guiding spacecraft to precise impacts, have obvious dual-use applications. China’s leadership has explicitly called for integrating military and civilian development in outer space, and last year Beijing established an Aerospace Force within the People’s Liberation Army. Technologies developed through deflection missions could follow the same path as BeiDou, China’s homegrown alternative to GPS, which began as a military system before being exported worldwide for civilian use.
Yet for all the ambition, China still trails the United States significantly in this field, and some of the sharpest critics are Chinese themselves. Wu Weiren, the prominent engineer leading China’s Deep Space Exploration Laboratory, co-authored a 2022 paper acknowledging that China has had low international contribution and influence in planetary defense. At the time, only 32 of roughly 40,000 known near-Earth asteroids had been discovered by Chinese observatories. Questions also linger about how much Beijing’s new early-warning network will rely on dedicated assets versus repurposed satellites, how it will be governed, and whether China will be willing to share data with international partners at a level commensurate with its aspirations.
